English I-Honors-Course Introduction
Course Description:
This course helps the student develop a general background in six major areas: narratives, poetry, drama, fiction, non-fiction, and mythology. These areas are further broken down by genres (narrative, novel, poetry, drama). Included throughout the year are assignments dealing with grammar skills and writing. Other descriptors include:
-improve composition skills by writing types of composition
-sharpen the conventions of writing through analysis of peers’ works
-revise writing with the help of peer evaluators
-strengthen the use of grammar and its functions within
-encourage better communication skills through the class discussion, small groups, activities, and presentations
Subject Matter:
Semester 1=Summer Reading (Anchor Text-Please Stop Laughing at Me), Narratives & Poetry (Anchor Text-Elements of Literature), Novel (Anchor Text-Things Fall Apart), and Mythology (Anchor Text-Edith Hamilton's Mythology)
Semester 2=Poetry Explication (Anchor Text-Homer's The Odyssey), Novel (Anchor Text-Fahrenheit 451), and Drama (Anchor Text-Romeo and Juliet)
