English III-CP Course Introduction
Course Description:
This is a two-term traditional American literature course, which will integrate writing skills and knowledge of American literature. Expository, narrative, and persuasive writing will be stressed, culminating in a research paper. This course presents an in-depth study of the American literary scene from Native American through contemporary thought. A minimum of three novels will be supplementary assignments. Other descriptors include:
-improve composition skills by writing types of composition
-sharpen the conventions of writing through analysis of peers’ works
-revise writing with the help of peer evaluators
-strengthen the use of grammar and its functions within
-encourage better communication skills through the class discussion, small groups, activities, and presentations
-further develop research skills and complete a research paper

Semester 1=Encounters and Foundation-Native American Literature, Puritanism, and Age of Reason (Anchor Text-Elements of Literature), Romanticism, Transcendentalism, Gothic Literature (Anchor Text-Elements of Literature and The Scarlet Letter), and the American Masters (Whitman and Dickinson) (Anchor Text-Elements of Literature)
Semester 2=Realism, Regionalism, and Modernism (Anchor Text-Elements of Literature), MLA Argumentative Research Essay, Modernism (Anchor Text-The Great Gatsby and Of Mice and Men), Contemporary Literature Project, and Contemporary Literature (Anchor Text-The Crucible and Catcher excerpts)
